An Internship is a one year obligation of advanced training in medicine and surgery while working closely with board certified specialists (surgeons, internal medicine specialists, cardiologists, etc). In human medicine a person that has not completed an internship does not have a full license to practice medicine unsupervised. Unlike human medicine, internships are not required to be performed by veterinarians. This means that veterinarians are allowed to practice medicine without doing an internship. Since they are not required, most veterinarians do not pursue this advanced training and instead go directly into general practice.
For those veterinarians who wish to gain more experience or become board-certified in a specific field of medicine or surgery, they can go on to complete an internship and/or a residency in their chosen area of interest
